Newcastle Upon Tyne, commonly known as Newcastle, is a large city on the river Tyne in the north east of England close to the North Sea. Up to 1,650,000 people live in the city’s metropolitan area, making it one of the most important cities in the UK.
As with most cities in the north of England, Newcastle grew rapidly and was an important manufacturing centre during the Industrial Revolution. Newcastle’s particular industries were mining, shipbuilding and ship-fitting. The city’s inhabitants known as ‘Geordies’ have a very distinct accent and many are famously passionate about the local football team Newcastle FC.
Newcastle has two universities and three cathedrals as well as being one of only three cities in The UK to have its own metro system. The North East as a region benefits from the lowest house prices in England, and as the cultural and economic centre of the region, Newcastle is an attractive place to buy property.
