Founded as a borough in the year 1207, Liverpool gained the city status in the year 1880 and nowadays has the seventh largest urban population in the UK. The modernization and urbanization took place only after the city gained popularity as a major port from the Eighteenth Century onwards.
The city is famous for being the home of The Beatles and other noted musicians as well as for its two largest football clubs Liverpool F.C. and Everton.
Liverpool city centre has now undergone great changes with new residential, commercial and leisure space being built and some of its most important areas have been granted World Heritage sites by UNESCO.
