The city of Chester is on the River Dee. The city was granted the status of been called a city in 1541.

The city has two universities for catering to the education of the people in the city. The University of Law and the University of Chester caters to the needs of the people. The University of Chester was initially a teacher’s training college and it got the status of a university in the year 2005.

With the coming of the railways in the Industrial Revolution era, the city underwent a drastic change. The city which had large tracts of farmlands was later converted into residential complexes to give places to the increasing population in the city. The increase in the population happened due to the surge of the industries in the area.

The city boasts of a huge number of landmarks. This contributes to the growth of tourism industry in this city. The town hall, the cathedral in the city centre is the most important sites for tourists. The city walls, the Rows, the county hall, shot tower, Chester Castle, the Grosvenor Bridge, Chester Race course, Grosvenor Park, Grosvenor Museum are the other major attractions of this city. The landmarks all give a flavor of the medieval times.

Chester also organizes a music festival- the Chester Summer Music festival since 1967. However the name has been changed to MBNA Chester Music Festival from 2013. Chester Rocks is the annual music festival of this city and it started in the year 2011.
