Bristol is the biggest city in South West England and is located in its own ceremonial county between Somerset and Gloucestershire. Its large population and distance from other big cities means that Bristol is an important cultural and economic centre for much of South West England.

During the 15th and 16th centuries Bristol was the second most important port in the country despite being located some way away from the sea up the River Avon.

Tourist attractions in the city include Bristol Zoo and the architecturally significant Clifton Suspension Bridge based on the designs of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The city was a runner up to Liverpool in as the 2008 European Capital of Culture and retains a good reputation as a centre for cultural events like its world famous balloon festival.

Bristol is a renowned university city with a significant student population and culture. Being fairly close to London but without the astronomical property prices the city also has a lot of European expats.
