Portsmouth is located on the south coast of England mainly on the Island of Portsea. It is the second largest city in Hampshire and the most important naval port in The UK.
The Spinnaker Tower dominates Portsmouth’s skyline and is reputedly the tallest building in The UK outside London. Portsmouth also has famous old naval ships The Mary Rose, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior which have been converted into museums and bring in significant numbers of tourists every year.
Defence and shipping are the main industries driving Portsmouth’s economy. As with most urban areas in The UK, tertiary industry also plays a big role these days with IBM choosing Portsmouth as the location for its European Headquarters.
The city is home to Portsmouth football known locally as “Pompey” who currently play in the fourth tier of English football.
Much of Portsmouth was destroyed during World War Two, as a result much of the architecture in the city is from the 50s and 60s. Due to the lack of available space for the city to expand into there are a lot of residential tower blocks, and in fact Portsmouth is the most densely populated city in The UK.
