Newport is a cathedral and university city, located on the River Usk. Newport has been a port since the time the Normans built it. The city gained in importance and was among the prime coal exporting port in the country. However the export of coal declined and this led to the gradual loss of popularity of the docks. However manufacturing and engineering gained in importance during the twentieth century in this city. The city also has the largest shredder for scrap metal in the world.
The city is full of many landmarks. This adds to the charm of the city among the tourists. Some of the dominant attractions of the city are John Frost Square, Cenotaph, Kings Hotel, Waterloo Hotel, Main post office, Newport Arcade, Masonic hall, Rodney parade, Newport Centre, City Bridge and many more.
University of South Wales is the seat of higher education in the city. The university has two campuses in the city. One campus is at Caerleon and the other is at Newport.
The city is also popular for the number of sports that the people engage in. Football, rugby, golf, cycling, tennis, snooker, pool are the games which are played by the people in this city. A football academy is also there in the Llanwern High School to impart football tips to the young students so that they can learn from a very small age. Indoor bowling and scouting are some of the leisure sports that are also played in this city. The city has an important and thriving scout district also.
