Manchester in the North West of England was historically part of Lancashire, but since 1972 has been part of Greater Manchester. The city itself has a population of over 500,000 whilst the greater urban area has a population of over two and a half million, making it the second largest in the country.

The city is famously home to rival football clubs Manchester United and Manchester City as well as MediaCityUK where an increasing number of media jobs are based, especially with the BBC. Where the city was once an industrial hub, it is now a centre for tertiary industry and has shown a real ability as a city to attract young professionals choosing to eschew property prices in London. Manchester has the largest tram system in the UK and the busiest airport in the country outside of London.

Manchester is a cosmopolitan city and has a large Asian community. The city has also been home to many famous bands and authors and has one of the biggest universities in the country and a sizable student population.
